Anne HummelThe JDRF Piedmont Triad Chapter of North Carolina was founded in 1994 after Leslie Anne Hummel rode her bicycle across the country and raised more than $65,000 for diabetes research in honor of her sister Elizabeth. Soon after the Chapter's founding, it held its first fundraising events, Walks to Cure Diabetes in Winston-Salem and Greensboro. These two events in 1995 raised $282,000 and set a national record for first year walks. Since 1995, walks have been added in High Point and Burlington/Alamance County. Together, these four fall walks now raise more than $1 million each year for important diabetes research.

In the years since, the Piedmont Triad Chapter has become involved in numerous other fundraising events, from the annual Hope Gala to a Spring Golf Classic to sending teams to Rides to Cure. The Chapter is also active in outreach to newly diagnosed patients and families.

The Chapter is noted for its fundraising prowess and efficiency, and is consistently ranked among the top performing JDRF chapters in the United States. Many Piedmont Triad Chapter staff and volunteers are active on a national level, in the areas of advocacy and outreach.
